Another rescheduled session due to Spring rain, but it was worth the wait. This is my beautiful cousin, Brookie….all grown up. Unbelievable! We set off for the plaza area to start our session, but I just wasn’t completely sure where I wanted to go…but then I took a wrong turn and passed by a spot that I had seen a couple weeks ago and thought would be perfect….so that was stop #1.
…and another wrong turn later…
I LOVE THIS SHOT!
…and another wall of sweeeetness at the second wrong turn….
We had just parked in Westport (done with wrong-turning) and I spotted this super dirty area in the back of some restaurant. PERFECT!
A fellow photog friend of mine had told me about this brick design a couple weeks ago, but she couldn’t remember where they were. As soon as I saw it, I KNEW it was the ones she was talking about. Very cool. (THANKS DEBBIE!)
And rather than go the way I normally do to I-35, I accidentally end up going a different way…which lead me to wrong turn #3. We were totally done with the session, but we passed this crazy urban wall with super talented painting.. yup… BRAKES, TURN SIGNAL, PARK….and WORK IT!
Ideas from this session go way back to when I first met Carly & Adam. As I always do, I explain that I love to personalize my clients’ photography with mixing something unique to them with a little creative extract from me. I call it my “Signature Shot”…thus because a signature is unique to an individual, and I love being able to produce something that will always be unique to them. I’m going to sound a little corney explaining it this way, but when I mentioned the Signature shot to Adam, I swear I saw a little spark go off in his head. He told me two things that that instantly sparked something in my head. Instant ELECTRICITY OF CREATIVE GENIUS! 🙂 …but first let me show you the beginning of our session…which is definitely what built up to the highlight “Signature Shot” at the end of the session.
I should also mention that Carly & Adam are adorable in every way. 🙂
So what if cars want to run us over…or my pretty yellow flower…these were fun and worth it! 🙂
Our session started off at a place of sentimental value to Carly & Adam. Wait, wait….I should also mention Adam is a total ROMANTIC! Ladies, I swear you will want your boyfriends and husbands to take notes. …anyway, Adam told me that he surprised Carly with his marriage proposal by taking her out to dinner at Lill’s on 17th (which has a pet-friendly patio). He planned everything down to bringing the dog and including the owner of the restaurant. Carly was successfully surprised! And of course, she accepted. 🙂 So…thus the reason I decided to call the lovely owner of Lill’s and ask permission to photograph them there. She remembered them right away and told me I was more than welcome. This restaurant is SUPER FABULOUS, BTW…so if you get a chance, I highly recommend an evening dinner there.
I had to include this one…CRACKS ME UP! Anyone who’s ever had their portraits taken knows that hand placement is sometimes a chore. “What should I do with my hands?” is a question I get often from my clients. Adam asked a few times and then it was like the weird hand thing…hands can be so weird. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Ok…so this was the second part of our photo adventure….into the signature shot(s) we go. I had in my head sort of what I wanted for this particular concept photo…but it wasn’t until the night before that I found a perfect spot for it (which Matt and I found at about 11p…in the dark….pitch dark…walking through English Landing…trying not to trip…and freezing in flip flops and shorts). So here’s what we did….Adam and Matt (the tall dudes) hung twine from the branches and I helped tie little white lanterns to the ends. Carly was the candle-fairy and started the fires. And WALA! We had an AWESOME scene under a lanterned-filled tree overlooking the Missouri River.
This is one of those FANTASTIC-LIGHT-LOVING mutli shots. This one consists of 29 shots!!!! Which tops my standing record of 25. I just want to say, these take a ridiculous amount of time to put together (especially this one since Photoshop was not smart enough to photo-merge/align for me with the branches and such…all MANUAL, baby!), but when you see it at full resolution in all it’s glory….yeah…it’s totally worth it.
And then there was this little shot I thought would be cute… umm…yea, it was sort of a fail. check out the video a the end. But I did really love this one shot..it was right before we all started chuckling and couldn’t stop.
This was the second “Signature shot”. …I know, “Second one?” you say… Well, Adam & Carly had given me two different, but equally awesome ideas to spin off from…and I just had to do them both. …And I want to tell another little short story…Again having the idea in my head, finding the location is always the hard part. This location was discovered by fate. The day before the session, I was getting some machine press drilling done into rocks (crazy, I know…but it’s a special DIY wedding decoration I’m doing for my sister-in-law’s wedding)…so there I was leaving the man’s workshop and I get a phone call as I pull out. I had to stop the car and dig around in my purse for it…by the time I had found it, a train had pulled up over the crossing I needed to go through. …BUT, I am a patient person…so I wait….and wait…and WAIT…until finally I see the end of the never-ending-long-train…but just as the end gets close, the train slows down and stops…RIGHT OVER MY CROSSING! Again, trying to be patient, I think “Surely, it will start moving momentarily.” NOPE. In fact, while it was stopped, another never-ending train started through going the opposite way. Nice. So my tolerance level was breached and I decided to go on a little adventure down the road side I was on in hopes there was an outlet somewhere. I go down this basically-deserted road and found a new route to the highway…and in the process, I found this spot where there was absolutely NOTHING. Nothing. No houses, no buildings, no trees…no nothing. WALA again! My concept shot had a location picked out. I was so excited that I took Matt out there to show him that night (which was right before going to English Landing for the other location hot spot. Again, it was pitch dark…and let me tell you it was like something out of a scary movie. It was creepy dark & deserted….but again, well worth going out there for the shot. :))) Oh…and the idea behind this picture is that Adam told me that something he likes to do with Carly is lay outside and pick out stars and make up stories to tell her about them. So SWEEET! AH! So here’s the video as promised. I keep watching it over and over again. It was a total fail. …but successful blooper. 🙂
For the life of me, I can’t quite remember how Sarah discovered my photography (maybe google?) but I’m so glad we connected. Her first born daughter is a little over a month old now and growing rapidly each and everyday. Didn’t want to wait any longer to get some really great portraits of her in her “littleness”.
I LOVED this one as soon as I saw it…I how Mazie is just watching. 🙂
They have the neatest bedding. Makes me want to update our own bedroom. I do buy new pillows every year or so, but I don’t think I’ve bought new bedding since we’ve lived here. Hummm…time for a change. Overstock, here I come.
Little breezy, haha
Heck yea, it was an awesome day for outdoor pictures! Puttin’ on the shades.
We were talking about ANTM during the session a bit, and when we went to do this shot, Mazie TOTALLY smiled with her eyes. ROCK ON, LITTLE MODEL! …oh, and this beautiful fabric was from Matt & Sarah’s wedding. Matt is first American born in his family. They are Scottish. So Coool!
Grandma will appreciate this one, for sure! 🙂
Still trying to think of the perfect title for this one. Maybe “Love Blossoms” FYI: There were no babies harmed in the making of the above image. 🙂 About an hour before our session, I randomly had a thought (my brain doesn’t always give me ample time to do things) for a neat baby portrait…but it would require a water pail. I had one but it’s beige, plastic, and overall ugly. Made me kick myself for not getting the super cool, long spouted chrome one I saw at Lowe’s a few months ago, but I was determined to pick one up along the way. I stopped at 3 stores trying to find one to buy, and I even stopped by The Shabby Hattie, in Parkville, thinking they’d have one for sure that I could just borrow…but all she had were tea pots. 🙁 I arrived at my session empty handed…but still thought I could do part of the idea. …as I was setting up, a fabulous neighbor a couple houses away came to the rescue with the PERFECT PAIL! Sometimes things just work out. 🙂 Thank you neighbor lady!
Words CANNOT describe just how much fun Matt and I had on Sunday photographing Jen, Brian, and their Zoey. Hopefully the pictures will do the talking for us.
This cracks me up!
Get ’em, Jen! hahahahahaha
Many already know I’m a big fan of goofy bloopers…I guess that’s why I love Brian & Jen so much…they know what I like, and they give it to me. {in a non-dirty way, hahahaha}
Another reason I love them soooo much….they have SUPER modeling abilities. 🙂
Thank you Mr. Security man for letting us stay a bit longer. You ROCK!
And Thank You McCoy’s Bar & Grill for allowing us to take some pictures after dinner! By the way…this series is their signature shot, Titled: “I’ll drink you under the table” And last but definitely not least, Thank You Jen & Brian for: (these are not in order)
1: Being in love with each other
2: Being playful
3. Scheduling extra session time (we just couldn’t have done what we did in 1 hour…or 2 or 3…hahaha)
4. Trusting me
5. Getting rained on
6. Running through sprinklers at the Nelson…in the dark
7. Getting bug bites while rolling around in grass (surprisingly, I only got one)
8. Skipping around a pond
9. Singing “Brown Eyed Girl” over and over and over again
10. Beer, Dinner, and dessert (I’m officially hooked on pudding bread)
As if I wasn’t already excited for the wedding, this puts me over the top. 🙂
Seriously, though… This is Amanda. Aka: My little sister. She is an amazing personality. For years growing up, I thought to myself…”It’s a good thing she’s pretty, because she can’t do anything worth squat.” Well…that was years and years ago. She’s all grown up and to my amazement, she’s found her nitch….hair. I remember the day she first cut and colored my hair (never forget it)…it was the last day of “frumpy Christie”. I don’t have a stylish bone in my body, but after she got done with me…well, to be honest, I was shocked. She was good at something! No, wait…I’ll rephrase…she is BADASS at something! …AND pretty. Dang. Some girls have all the luck. hahaha Ever since Amanda has discovered her secret super powers of hair styling, I have had a new appreciation for the mop on my head and the confidence it gives me. Plus, she’s a fun personality, so sitting in the chair for a couple hours getting highlights doesn’t seem like a chore. 🙂 Most women with appreciation for having good looking hair, don’t trust just any ‘ol stylist to transform their hair every 4-6ish weeks. Most women search endlessly to find that one match made in heaven…a stylist that understands the look you are after, gives you hair confidence, and treats you like a personal friend. Many women are reading this and nodding in agreement. Ask any one of her clients and they will confirm my declaration: AMANDA ROCKS!
She’s gonna kill me when she sees which images I posted. I just liked this one because she about knocked those things over. She’s funny.
And pretty. Did I mention that already?
And this is us playing around in the bathroom…because the lighting was cool.
This is Shampagne, where you can find Amanda if you so wish to have happy hair.
This is no ordinary, boring salon either. Part of the reason Amanda chose to work here was the salon’s personality. The owner, and all of the other stylists, are awesome…the decor is World Market meets Starbucks…and the atmosphere is relaxing and down to earth.
Even the bathroom is cool! Ok, so in case you want to visit the salon, or make an appointment with Amanda, here is the information:
